1 Samuel 9:27
The Old Testament book of 1 Samuel tells the story of Saul being chosen to be the first King of Israel. Samuel, who was a prophet and a judge, was to anoint Saul with oil as a symbol of God’s approval and blessing on him. But before pronouncing God’s blessing on Saul, Samuel told him to “stand still a while that I may show thee the word of God.”
Samuel knew that if Saul were to have God’s blessing and become a strong King, he must take time to listen to God’s word.
This story should remind us that if we want God’s blessing and help in our lives, we too must take the time to listen to God’s word, the Bible. We can hear God’s word by attending Sunday school, Church Bible studies, and by just reading the Bible.
The Bible not only tells of God’s love and forgiveness, but also gives practical advice for everyday life. Just a few quiet minutes each day with the Bible can give us the courage and wisdom to face difficult situations and decisions. The Bible also produces calmness in spite of our circumstances. Hearing God’s word will also increase our faith in him and lead us to believe in his son, Jesus Christ.
