Editor's Note: Letters to The Courier are normally printed in the opinion page, but with this one sent from VCHS Coach Josh Kirkpatrick, we're placing this among our other sports coverage.
Editor, The Courier:
Success in any endeavor requires the commitment, support and sacrifice from many individuals. The sport of cross country is no different. First and foremost, I would like to sincerely thank my runners for their commitment throughout the season. High expectations are set, and they work hard throughout the summer, on early mornings, and during various weather conditions to meet those expectations. It is an honor and a privilege to have coached these runners. They have represented our school and community with class and with pride.
A big thank you is also extended to all of the parents, guardians and others who are involved in the daily lives of our runners. If it were not for the sacrifices (time, money, etc.) made and support given, our runners would not be able to perform the way they do. Thank you for allowing your children to be a part of this team and for trusting me in their care.
Thank you to the Vinton County Local School District Board of Education, our superintendent Mr. Brooks, high school principals Mr. Waddell and Mr. Arthur, middle school principals Mr. Ward and Mrs. Henneman, and our athletic director Mr. Combs. The administrative support we receive is tremendous.
Thanks to Tyler Buchanan at the Vinton County Courier and Todd Compston at The Telegram. The coverage we have received in the local newspapers is greatly appreciated. The runners enjoy seeing their pictures and names in the paper.
I would also like to acknowledge the contributions made by my two assistant coaches, Melanie Signoracci and Brett Jones. They are incredibly selflessness and enthusiastic individuals. Their commitment to the sport has been an integral part of our success.
Finally, I would like to thank the Vinton County community. The humbling displays of support we have received this season (the personal well-wishes, the Facebook comments, the billboard and window signs, and meet attendance) are all examples of why this is such an incredible place. We are fortunate to be a part of this community.
