Editor, The Courier:

May is Bike Helmet Safety Awareness Month. On May 19, the Vinton County Health Department, Help Me Grow and the WIC Program will together hold the sixth annual Bike Safety Event (Rodeo). It will be held at the old high school parking lot this year since it has grown so much. Each year, this event has raised more and more awareness of the importance of wearing a bicycle helmet.

Did you know that in the event of a crash, wearing a bicycle helmet reduces the risk of brain injury and head injury by as much as 85 to 88 percent? Unfortunately, estimates on helmet usage suggest that only 25 percent of children age 5 to 14 years old wear a helmet when riding a bike. For teen riders, the percentage using a bicycle helmet is close to zero.

Last year, we gave away 30 bicycles/accessories. This year we have set a goal of giving away 50 bikes. We invite you to join with us and ask for your support. We would appreciate any cash donation (to purchase bikes to give away) or new bicycle donations.

The size of our events will be based on the amount and type of donations received. Donors can be individuals, groups, religious organizations, public officials or businesses. Your donation may be tax exempt. Please contact us as early as possible so that we may begin planning and provide you with any further information needed. Help us make this year even more valuable.
