Vinton County's inaugural community garden, hosted by the Vinton County Extension Office and numerous other organizations, is closing out its first growing season. The "Putting Healthy Food on the Table" project began in June 2014 with goals of creating a community garden, establishing container gardens, conducting outreach at the local farmer's market and offering informational classes to participants.
Fourteen residents participated and attended gardening classes taught by local horticulturalist Bob Rannells and food-related classes with Kate Homonai, Family and Consumer Sciences Program Coordinator for OSU Extension.
Members of the project's task force are already planning for 2015. Information for the 2015 growing season will be provided this coming February. Until then, residents can learn more about the project by calling the Extension office at 596-5212 or visiting www.vinton.osu.edu.
Funding for “Putting Healthy Food on the Table” was provided through an OSU CARES grant. The project is a collaborative effort between the Vinton County Extension Office, OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center, The Appalachia Community Cancer Network and local stakeholders.
