OAK HILL — The Jackson County Chapter of Ohio Retired Teachers Association (JCCORTA) met in September to greet the new 2019 school year. They gathered at St. Paul’s Church in Oak Hill for a home cooked meal prepared by the ladies of the church.
Local President, Cindy Kessler, gave an update on the recent Ohio Retired Teachers Association (ORTA) meeting held in Jackson, Ohio. Issues such as the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) lawsuit were discussed.
Kennedy Duncan was announce as the 2019 scholarship winner. Duncan is a senior in Early Childhood Education at Ohio University. She received $1,000 towards her final year of education.
The JCCORTA Scholarship is offered yearly to graduates of Jackson County high schools. The applicant must be a senior/junior education major enrolled in any Ohio college. Criteria considered include GPA, financial need, and scholastic achievement. Application are due by May 31st and are available at www.jacksoncountyretired teachers.weebly.com. Jackson County Retired Teachers membership is open to teachers enrolled in Ohio’s State Teachers Retirements System; as well as, teachers retired from any other state, but living in Ohio. Non-teachers with common concerns may become associate members.
The next meeting of Jackson County Retired Teachers will be Wednesday, November 6, 2019. The program will include an auction of household goods, crafts, and baked goods. Attendees are encouraged to bring auction items as all auction proceeds go the JCCORTA scholarship fund.
