When the Vinton-Jackson Courier received a tip from Brittany Morris about South Elementary’s spelling bee, the newspaper reached out to Principal Miranda Smith to learn more.
Photos included with the story show the winners of the fourth and fifth grades’ contest. Congrats to these spelling champions! Morris’ son Bentley Tackett won first place in the spelling bee for fourth grade.
A spelling bee is a competition in which contestants are asked to spell a broad selection of words, usually with a varying degree of difficulty. Spelling bees help to promote literacy by providing children with a positive goal to work toward, and give them a forum to display the fruits of their hard work, according to the Academy of Accelerated Learning.
