GLEN ROY — A child has perished in a house fire in Glen Roy, while another child is in the hospital with serious injuries.
Coalton Fire Chief Chris Brown told The Courier that the fire happened on Monday, Feb. 17, around 1 p.m.
Brown said that firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire located at 55 Center St. in Glen Roy. It was a small two-story, wood-frame house.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a fully-involved structure fire, and mutual aid was requested from Jackson, Wellston, and Hamden fire departments. Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department was on standby. Also responding to the scene were Jackson County EMS, and Jackson County Coroner Dr. Alice Frazier.
Brown said that one child died in the fire, while another juvenile escaped with reported third-degree burns to their hands and face. That juvenile was transported to Holzer Medical Center of Jackson and then flown to a Columbus area hospital.
The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene to investigate the incident. Brown reported that is the protocol when there is a fatality.
Brown stated that the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, and he wouldn’t speculate on the cause. Firefighters cleared the scene around 3:50 p.m. Monday afternoon.
Dr. Frazier did re-confirm to The Courier that a 3-year-old boy had died in the fire, while another juvenile received serious injuries. The age of the one juvenile has not been released.
On Tuesday, Feb. 18, Dr. Frazier told The Courier that the 3-year-old boy's cause of death was smoke inhalation.
