The Vinton County Historical and Genealogical Society has received a $1,000 grant from the Ohio Historical Society toward the creation of a Maude Collins historical marker.
Collins was the state’s first female sheriff.
She took on the role of Vinton County sheriff after her husband Fletcher was killed in the line of duty. She finished out his term and won re-election in 1926.
Society President Deanna Tribe updated the Vinton County commissioners at their meeting on Monday, Nov. 5. A total of 63 applications were recently submitted to the Ohio Historical Society through the Historical Markers Grant Program, with just 10 being approved.
The county commissioners have already approved space for the marker’s placement near the courthouse.
Tribe told the commissioners that the marker should be finished and erected sometime in the fall of 2019.
Vinton County already has two existing historical markers: in Wilkesville, commemorating the Morgan’s Raiders, and another at Hope Furnace.
