With former Ohio Rep. Ryan Smith now serving as president of the University of Rio Grande, a process has been announced to fill his vacant seat.
Smith represented the 93rd House District, which includes all or parts of Jackson, Vinton, Gallia and Lawrence counties. His resignation was effective Oct. 3.
When a seat is vacant, anyone can submit letters of interest to fill the role.
Speaker of the Ohio House Larry Householder (R-Glenford) announced a screening panel of four Republican legislators would consider these applications and conduct interviews. Among those on this panel is Rep. Jay Edwards (R-Nelsonville), who represents the other portion of Vinton County in the 94th District.
From there, the committee makes a recommendation of one candidate — to be voted upon by the Ohio House’s Republican caucus.
Once approved, the person would serve the remainder of Smith’s term through the end of 2020.
