CHILLICOTHE — For the second straight week Vinton County took on an elite running back. This time it was Lane Ruby, a dynamic tailback who has been making headlines since he was a freshman.
Unlike last week, the Vikings were unable to stop a dominant back, as Ruby ran all over Vinton County, finishing with 171 yards on 15 carries. The Southeastern Panthers rolled to a 35-0 win behind Ruby.
Unlike last week, it looked like Panthers’ game from the first snap, and it was for the entire stretch of the evening.
Southeastern wasted no time taking advantage of the field position. It took the Panthers just four plays to score, capped off by a Lane Ruby touchdown from 6 yards out. Following a two-point conversion, the Panthers were up 8-0.
The Vikings punted and the Panthers once again responded. This time it was a heavy dose of Ruby and junior Mikey Nusser who took turns acting as a battering ram against the Viking defense. The drive would end with senior Jared Sulpher punching the ball in from a yard out to give Southeastern a 14-0 lead.
After another Viking drive stalled, Southeastern quickly got back to work.
An Okey Fitzwater punt pinned Southeastern at its own 4. That mattered little to Ruby and co. On the first play of the drive, Ruby found junior Aarick Hill who evaded multiple Vikings on the way to a 78-yard gain. Three plays later Nusser got his turn in the end zone, this time scoring from a yard out. A successful two-point conversion put Southeastern ahead 22-0.
Vinton County later had a chance to get on the score board following a Southeastern fumble. The Vikings however, could not convert on a fourth and goal and put the ball back into the hands of Ruby.
That turned out to be a massive mistake. On the seventh play of the drive, he turned a broken play into a big time play. He juked around two defenders and outran the entire Viking defense, taking the ball 71 yards to the house, putting the Panthers up 28-0 heading into the half.
Southeastern tacked on another score in the fourth after Nusser found pay dirt from two yards out to put the Panthers up 35-0. With a running clock in effect both teams went through the motions and the Panthers walked off the field 2-0 with an impressive win over a Viking team that shut down one of the Chillicothe area’s best runners in Jamarcus Carroll just a week ago.
Jacob Wells was a bright spot for the Vikings. Wells had 130 yards on the ground on 17 carries.
The loss sees Vinton County slip to 0-2 on the season at it travels to Fairfield Union on Friday to take on the Falcons.
