ROCKSPRINGS — The Wellston baseball and softball teams swept Meigs on the road Wednesday, April 24.
The Rockets earned an 8-6 victory over the Marauders, while the Lady Rockets won more comfortably, 6-1.
Ashley Compston pitched a complete game for Wellston, giving up one unearned run. She struck out five and walked just two.
Meanwhile, the softball team slugged 11 hits, including a double from Kenna Kilgour and a triple from Mya Bouska. Each went 2-for-3 on the evening, with Bouska scoring a run and Kilgour scoring twice and driving in a run.
Smith had a single and two RBIs; Compston had a hit and an RBI; Jenna Johnston had three singles and a run scored and Brailey Rainer singled twice and drove in a run. Erica Scott and Kamryn Karr scored runs for Wellston.
The Lady Rockets improved to an impressive 16-3 record, with a 9-1 mark in Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division play.
The baseball team jumped out to an early lead, then scored a few more insurance runs late to win 8-6 at Meigs.
Chase Ingalls singled in the first run and Timothy Stanley later scored in the inning on an error. Three more Wellston runs scored in the second, on another two-run single from Ingalls and another Meigs error.
Down 5-0, the Marauders rallied back to score four runs in the third off of Wellston starter Hunter Cardwell.
Cardwell would go six innings, giving up six runs (but just two earned). He struck out four, walked none and scattered nine hits.
He would ultimately earn the win, however, as Wellston scored three more times to stay ahead throughout. Stanley earned the save by closing out the seventh inning for the Rockets.
Wellston improved to 11-6 overall and 5-5 in TVC-Ohio play.
The baseball and softball teams' games against Vinton County on Friday, April 26 was postponed due to rain.
