TUPPERS PLAINS — The Lady Vikings got their 2019 season started on the right foot.
Vinton County defeated Eastern in straight sets on Monday: 25-12, 25-18 and 25-10.
Coming off an 8-4 record in the league in 2018, the Lady Vikings returned many of their stars from a year ago. They fared well on Monday: Sydney Smith led the squad with 11 kills, with Lacy Ward tallying 10. Zoey Kiefer added seven and Maylea Huff and Cameron Zinn both recorded three.
The Lady Vikes served up 14 aces, with Zinn leading the way with four. Kerrigan Ward and Smith both had three.
Zinn was the team's primary setter against Eastern, recording 22 sets to go along with six digs on defense. Kerrigan Ward's 12 digs led the team; Smith and Huff both had six.
The Lady Vikes host Southeastern on Tuesday evening and return to the road on Thursday to face Paint Valley. The team's Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division schedule begins against Nelsonville-York at home on Tuesday, Aug. 27.
