BIDWELL — Wellston couldn't have asked for a better start to its softball season, at least in terms of league play.
The Lady Rockets earned a 4-0 shutout over River Valley on Wednesday. Ashley Compston surrendered a lone hit, striking out six in seven innings of work. River Valley managed six walks off Compston, but were held off the scoreboard.
Wellston recorded single runs in four different innings to pace the offense. Kenna Kilgour led the way with three hits and a run batted in. Erica Scott drove in a run on a double. Mya Bouska's bases loaded walk led to another run, and Bouska scored a run herself on a Raider error.
Wellston opened its season with a non-conference victory over South Webster on Tuesday. Wellston scored four runs in the first inning and eight in the second.
Molly Smith pitched five innings for Wellston, striking out 14 and giving up just the two earned runs.
Incredibly, Wellston scored its 12 runs despite recording just four hits — a pair of doubles from Jenna Johnston and singles from Compston and Bouska
The team did, however, manage to record 13 walks in the game — including three from Kilgour and two apiece from Bouska, Smith and Bailey Rainer.
Wellston hosts Ironton on Thursday night and returns to TVC-Ohio action with a home game against Nelsonville-York on Friday.
