Note: This story appears in the Wednesday, Aug. 7 newspaper on Page A1.

Sydney Dawes, a staff journalist with The Vinton-Jackson Courier, has been named editor of the newspaper.

Dawes has written for The Courier since 2017, having primarily served as the Vinton County reporter for the weekly publication.

As editor, Dawes will oversee the McArthur-based newsroom as it continues to provide extensive coverage of Vinton and Jackson counties.

The staff is also comprised of sports editor Brock Netter, multimedia journalist Jeremiah Shaver, who primarily covers Jackson County, administrative assistant Pam Johnson and a host of freelance reporters and photographers.

Dawes replaces Tyler Buchanan, who has reported for The Courier since 2013 and had served as editor since 2015. He remains the editor of sister newspaper The Athens Messenger and will continue to contribute news and sports content for The Courier going forward.

“Sydney is a hardworking and dedicated journalist who has built a reputation of honest, fair community reporting in her time with The Courier,” Buchanan said. “I am very excited for the future of this newspaper and believe it will continue growing under Sydney’s leadership.”

Dawes, 23, is a native of Cedarville in Western Ohio. She earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism at Ohio University in 2017 and began reporting for The Courier shortly after.

“Everyone in Vinton County has been nothing but welcoming to me since my start with The Courier,” Dawes said. “I’m excited for this opportunity and very thankful for those who helped me along the way.”

Dawes has contributed many new features with the newspaper since then, including her regular “Women of Vinton County” series and an in-depth look at each school’s leadership in the county.

Among her reporting interests is the topic of health; she has written numerous stories about the theorized “cancer cluster” in Vinton County and rising Hepatitis C cases in the area.

In recent months, she’s covered a range of topics — from the Jr. Fair to the new Hope School visitor’s center.

Dawes’ reporting contributed to The Courier earning a first place Osman C. Hooper Newspaper Award for overall news coverage in 2018.
